I am an electrical engineer by profession and worked on the development and design of communication equipment for many years. In parallel with this, I became involved in media content as a radio programme producer, and then presenter, and produced radio programmes & AV’s in the 1980 / 90’s for African Enterprise. (Definitely old technology!).

I headed up the group that was awarded the first 1-year Community Radio station license in 1995 (Radio Maritzburg). I was subsequently involved in the setting up of a number of Community Radio stations.
As the General Manager of the ACB / ACM, 2003 – 2012, I facilitated training in various Christian radio stations.
In 2012 I moved to Commercial Radio, and did the set-up and was the technical manager for the Vuma 103 FM radio station until 2014.
In 2016 I founded a small non-profit consulting company to assist Christian radio stations – Sarepta Radio Consulting.
Since 2016 I have facilitated in the Nemisa MK1 Radio Production learnership course in KZN.

I served for over 7 years as production manager for CV Africa and 1Africa. During this amazing time, I worked closely with our presenter pool and producer’s to help create meaningful content for our Pan African listeners and affiliate radio stations. I was privileged to have also been part of various training workshops across Africa which were focused on improving the effectiveness of community Christian radio.
Apart from this I have also authored a successful sound engineering course for Damelin and Intec colleges. My passion for sound design and radio continues.

I am a full-time missionary and joined Radio Khwezi as a volunteer in 1995 at its inception. As the station developed I became the Studio Manager and as it further grew I became the Marketing Manager. My passion for radio and the desire to develop local talent in radio led me to start a training department at the station and I became the Training Manager.

I completed an international ‘Train the Trainer’ course at the Radio Netherlands Training Centre in Hilversum. I also qualified as an accredited outcomes-based assessor with Assessment College of South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

I am also an accredited trainer with ICTI a Christian training institution based in the UK.

I have served on the board of ACM for several years and during that time performed the role of training officer.

My contribution to the development of the community radio sector as a whole in South Africa has been significant having served on both the provincial and national structures of the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF).

With the enormous amount of experience and a wealth of expertise and knowledge I have gained, I currently offer my services as a media consultant and radio trainer. I specialise in Radio Production with a focus on news and current affairs for community radio. My ability to communicate in isiZulu is an added advantage as a radio trainer.

    News Production for Radio
This course introduces you to news production for radio news and current affairs programmes. You will learn the basic skills of covering news including writing and presenting as well producing current affairs. The course is intended to develop and strengthen your skills and knowledge in the way you plan and produce your news. It will concentrate on giving essential guidelines used in producing news and current affairs based on journalistic ethics. While imparting information, it will also focus on problem solving.
News is a major draw card in attracting audience and keeping them. Radio broadcasters need to be creative in reporting objectively on news stories that will make the listener sit up and take notice. Your news needs to be relevant, immediate and interesting.
To get the most out of this module you should be listening to as many a variety of radio news as you can. These might include SABC news and current affairs on SAfm and Ukhozi, as well as independent commercial radio stations such as 702 Talk Radio, Yfm or Highveld Stereo to name a few. You should also log on to news websites. Recommended information is provided at the end of this booklet.

UCB Africa seeks to speak hope to the nations of Africa. We work in partnership with Radio Pulpit to train and help other Christian broadcasters in Southern Africa. The African Christian broadcaster is faced with unique challenges. Problems like the Aids pandemic, poverty and internal conflict has caused the rest of the world to refer to Africa as the “Dark Continent”; many have given up hope for Africa to ever be part of a so-called first world.
I am however totally convinced that God has a special, rapidly unfolding plan for Africa, and although the digital divide is a stark reality, the contribution of Christian radio and Television to transform the hearts and minds of people and complement moral regeneration initiatives is not to be underestimated. Radio is still the most cost-effective, most accessible medium of reaching out on a large scale with a Christian message of hope, healing and reconciliation.
We pray that lifes will be touched , and souls be won to Christ through the modest contribution that the UCB Africa brings to Africa. May God’s territory be greatly enlarged through our efforts to empower African Christian broadcasters.
